According to LLF statistical research, mental health issues have a powerful and expanding impact in the workplace, costing the economy an estimated $20 billion annually. Mental health challenges and illnesses are the number one cause of disability in Australia, and the LLF estimates that between 10 and 25 per cent of mental disability costs directly incurred by many employers could be avoided by implementing psychologically healthy and safe workplace strategies.

“The SHAWS initiative is Limelight leading the way in Australia for pro-active good mental health practises in the workplace, which increases productivity, reduces turnover and reduces the costs incurred from absenteeism, presenteeism and compensation claims.

“As many as one in five adult Australians experience some form of mental illness in a given year, and as many as two-thirds will not seek help in large part due to fears of being stigmatized,”

Although there have been improvements in recent years, there is still a long way to go to make mental health as important as physical health and drive out unacceptable practices that still exist, such as long waiting times, people being transferred long distances to get a bed, face-down restraint being used too often and children being cared for on adult wards and facing a cliff-edge of support when they turn 18. People with severe mental illness also face shorter life expectancy – this shows that more needs to be done to help those with mental health problems stay physically healthy as well.
