Research into Mental Illness'

As there is little understanding on this issue, sufferers of these disabilities maybe seen by members of the communitee as outcasts. Reseach and communitee awareness can help these issues, and these disorders will become more acceptable.

Other issues relating to research include proper medication and counselling sessions that prove effective. Many drugs supplied for these purposes carry severe side effects, the user may find the medication is not helping with there symptons, and a long process of trial and error is necessary to help treat the individual.

In Australia depression has been identified as a priority under the Second National Mental Health Plan and has been adopted as the first area of focus for mental illness, one of six National Health Priority Areas (NHPA). The six NHPA were identified to focus national attention and effort on areas of greatest burden and where the greatest health gains can be achieved. In March 2000 in recognition of the huge personal, social and economic impact of this illness, the Commonwealth Government launched the National Depression Initiative (NDI). The NDI forms the focal point for efforts to address the health burden of depression in Australia and is being progressed through the independent public company 'Beyondblue'.

Beyond Blue

'Beyondblue', chaired by the Hon Jeff Kennett, provides a new national collaborative model for funding and managing activity to address depression. Professor Ian Hickie is the Chief Executive Officer and activities of 'beyondblue' are determined and managed by its Board of Directors. The Commonwealth and Victorian Governments have each committed $17.5 million over five years to this important initiative. This is being further enhanced by funding from State Governments, and partnerships with a range of business, education and community groups, including: the Australian Football League (AFL), Australia's Rotary, Lifeline, and the Inspire Foundation- Reachout.

The key aims of 'Beyondblue' are to:

increase community awareness of depression and to reduce stigma and discrimination;

enhance professional training and development and;

support research into prevention, treatment and management approaches.
